With its four strings —two melody strings, one middle string, and one bass string—the mountain dulcimer produces a warm, clear, and resonant sound. The traditional tuning is DAD, though the instrument can, of course, be tuned differently according to the player’s preferences.
Thanks to its straightforward fretboard layout, the mountain dulcimer is particularly well-suited for beginners. Melodies can be learned intuitively, and the combination of melody and drone strings quickly produces the typical, distinctive dulcimer sound.
