The Tirupati Harinam Harmonium is an especially small, lightweight, and durable instrument with a strong, penetrating sound. However, its small bellows provide only limited sustain. It is ideal for travel, accompanying kirtans and group chanting, and for rhythmically accented playing.
Chordal playing with long sustained tones and variable volume control is only possible to a limited extent due to the small bellows capacity. The low weight and compact dimensions are achieved through an intelligent design—without a complicated or failure-prone folding mechanism.
When placed on the floor, the angled keyboard may take some getting used to, as the instrument has no lower case. When sitting cross-legged, however, the Tirupati Harinam can be leaned against the legs, positioning the keyboard horizontally and close to the body.
Each note is equipped with two reeds of basic quality in the middle and lower octaves (male/bass), producing a powerful, penetrating tone. The two reed sets cannot be used separately, as the Harinam does not feature register stops.
The outer bellows at the back open upward and fill with air when unlocked. To play, they must be pulled toward you against slight spring resistance. The inner bellows open downward and feature removable springs that allow the tension to be adjusted.
The tonal range is smaller than that of a full-size harmonium but sufficient for all common mantras and kirtans. With a shoulder strap attached to the integrated carrying rings, the Harinam Harmonium can also be played while standing.

Pinewood is mainly used for harmoniums in the Delhi region and is considerably softer than the teakwood more commonly used in Mumbai and Kolkata. As a result, many pinewood harmoniums may develop small dents or minor cosmetic imperfections during manufacturing or transport to Europe. These are material-related characteristics and not considered defects.
Our harmoniums are tuned in India to equal temperament at the international standard pitch of A = 440 Hz.
