The khol (also known as
mridanga ) is a traditional Indian double-headed drum that is mainly used in the spiritual music of East India, especially in Vaishnavism and kirtans. It consists of a bulbous clay or ceramic body with two drumheads at both ends. The heads are different sizes and produce high and low tones. The khol is usually played with the hands and is known for its clear, rhythmic sound. It plays a central role in the music of bhakti yoga and often accompanies chants in honor of Krishna.
